The warm night breeze tossed her silky auburn hair as her bloody feet clung to the edge of the rooftop. In front of her, ten stories down, was certain death, or she could turn and face the shadowy figure that had chased her to this dead end. Jump! The voice in her head demanded.

“It didn’t need to come to this, but you just wouldn’t let it go.” The dark silhouette limped closer, with blood spewing from a deep cut in his leg. Instead of remorse for all the lives he’d tormented, his face glistened from the pleasure he took in her helplessness.

Her body ached, and her legs were on the verge of collapse. “I won’t let you win.”

“Sweet child, I’ve already won.” The gap between them closed with each lagging step he took. “The headlines will read, ‘Grieving heiress leapt into her dead father’s arms, to her death.’”

A wave of anger burned from deep within. “We both know that’s not true.”

“True? Truth is merely one’s point of view. Surely, you’ve learned at least that much from my teachings.” His raspy voice sent chills down her spine.

“The truth?” Harnessing her fear, she inched away from the edge. “The truth is you eliminated my father the same way you’re trying to eliminate me. But why? What could you have gained from his death?”

“Pity you won’t live to find out. This leap of yours will remove two burdensome problems for me: you and your meddling curiosity!” His black overcoat snapped in the wind. “If it’s any consolation, he didn’t want your story to end this way. In fact, neither did I.”

He? He who? “You worked side by side with my father for years. After he died, you brought me into your home and treated me like your own daughter. Where is that man?” She searched his cold green eyes for some part of him that still cared for her, but bitterness had stolen his soul long ago.

“Your father made one final request before I…well before he slipped and fell to his death..."

Delightful Characters and a Great Story

I tend towards darker content, so The Vanishing Heiress was my first romp into what I consider a cozy mystery, and it didn't disappoint at all. Jayde is a woman with a terrible past that she can't remember. In between trying to find out who she was and who wanted her dead, she devotes her career to solving mysteries around historical buildings in order to preserve those relics of the past.

Her personality and relationships with her team are THE reason I loved this book so much. The story is great, an automatic 5-star, but I would give this book six for loving Jayde, Mandy, and Ashton so much.

And, this is awkward, but my 73-year-old dad doesn't have an email or a computer to leave a review, but I gifted a copy of this book to him for Christmas and his terribly old-fashioned, but wonderful opinion was, "It was like Nancy Drew, but ten times *better*!"

High praise from my old man, so give this one a chance. You won't be sorry!
