Twenty-one-year-old Emily-Jane Chatwicke came from a wealthy family known for the loyalty, integrity, and honor bred into their blood. Not so well known was the fierce rivalry within the family ranks that she would unwittingly discover while working on her college thesis. The journey would take her through time uncovering secrets that would tear her family apart and treat the ones she loves the most.

The next morning, Emily-Jane joined Auntie Rae on her balcony with her laptop in hand. “Okay, here’s what I have so far. I uploaded the latest version of the Chatwicke family tree from and updated it.”
“That’s impressive. How many generations back?”
Emily-Jane slid her chair closer to her great-aunt. “The assignment is to go back at least three generations. The official tree has it back to the 1500's, but the further back, the fewer details, and accurate information.” She swiped through page after page. “Look at this, none of this was filled in, but I searched through tons of books at the library and city records and was able to fill all this in.”
“You’ve been busy. I didn’t know Alice lost a baby girl at birth.”
“I know and look at this. I found a distant cousin that was never included in any of our trees, but he’s legit.”
"Meaning he is truly a Chatwicke, but a distant one and just left off the tree. I guess you could say, someone, trimmed that branch.”
Emily-Jane laughed and hugged her great-aunt. "I miss you so much when I'm away at school. Well, I’ve got some research to do in our library and lots of writing to do. Before I go, does this look correct to you?”
Auntie Rae adjusted the laptop for a better view. On the screen was a note that read:
I want to talk more about our last conversation, but I don’t think it’s safe to talk here. Act like we’re still talking about the family tree. I can do a lot of poking around under the guise of my project, but I can’t do it alone. Can I bring Duncan into our confidence? He’s the only person in the world besides you that I totally trust.
“Yes, that looks good to me. You have this well in hand.” It was a good sign for her to be out of bed, but perhaps too soon. Her once bright blue eyes were still dull, and her face was so pale. “Just make sure you are absolutely positive before you enter the information in.”
“Trust me, I’ll make sure it’s verified. You know, I’ve heard so much about your parents and their parents, but not much past that. It’s fascinating how modern technology makes it possible to go back at least two generations further than before.”
“That is remarkable."
Emily-Jane’s eyes widened. “Not only that, but there are pictures and stories, and personal journals. I can’t wait to show you the finished product.”
"It will make an excellent addition to our library for many generations to learn about their heritage"
"Too bad it won’t finally put an end to my theory that Phillip was adopted.”
“What did your brother do this time?”
